The word marketing means many things to many people. Some people think about it as the way we attract business while others only think of it as being synonymous with advertising. However, there is so much more to marketing than just magazine ads, bridal shows, and networking. Marketing is a system, a process, an attitude, and a lens through which key decisions should be made. Therefore, in an effort to better understand how marketing can work for you, it’s important to understand the word itself, its meaning and implications.
According to the American Marketing Association, “Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.”
I like to focus on four key elements of this definition..Creating, Communicating, Delivering, and Value.
Creating, Communicating, Delivering, and Value
These are the keys to marketing. Each decision that we make, product that we develop, or service that we offer must be able to create value, communicate value, and/or deliver value to our customers. Without value, there is no incentive for exchange and therefore no incentive for us to be in business.
